Garbage Disposal Do’s and Don’ts

Your garbage disposal is a convenient appliance for handling food scraps, but it’s not indestructible. To avoid clogs, jams, and costly repairs, follow these do’s and don’ts from 1213 Plumbing:

Do:

  • Run cold water: Always run cold water while operating the disposal. Cold water helps solidify grease and fats, preventing them from coating the disposal blades and pipes.
  • Grind food scraps gradually: Don’t overload the disposal. Feed food scraps in small amounts, allowing the disposal to grind them completely.
  • Use citrus peels: Citrus peels can help deodorize the disposal and freshen your kitchen.
  • Clean regularly: Grind ice cubes and rock salt periodically to clean the disposal blades and remove buildup.

Don’t:

  • Pour grease or oil: Grease and oil solidify in pipes, causing clogs and backups.
  • Grind fibrous foods: Fibrous foods like celery, corn husks, and onion skins can wrap around the disposal blades and cause jams.
  • Put non-food items: Avoid putting anything other than food scraps down the disposal, such as glass, metal, or plastic.
  • Use harsh chemicals: Harsh chemical drain cleaners can damage the disposal and pipes.
  • Turn off the water immediately: Allow the water to run for a few seconds after turning off the disposal to flush away any remaining food particles.

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • If the disposal is jammed: Turn off the power and use tongs or pliers to remove any obstructions.
  • If the disposal is clogged: Try plunging the sink or using a drain snake to clear the blockage.
  • If the disposal is leaking: Check for loose connections or cracks in the unit. If you can’t identify the source of the leak, contact a plumber.
